A Brief History of Edox: Innovation at Depth

For over 135 years, Edox has quietly but powerfully carved a niche for itself in the world of Swiss watchmaking. Known for precision, durability, and a deep-rooted passion for the sea, Edox’s story is one of quiet innovation and timeless design. Whether you're a diver, a watch collector, or someone who simply appreciates refined engineering, Edox offers a legacy worth knowing — and wearing.

The Edox journey began in 1884, when Christian Ruefli-Flury, a talented watchmaker in Biel, Switzerland, handcrafted a pocket watch as a birthday gift for his wife. So impressed by the gift, she encouraged him to start his own watch company. That gesture of love led to the birth of Edox, which means "measuring of time" in ancient Greek — a name that would become synonymous with precision and endurance. By the mid-20th century, the brand gained recognition for its dedication to technical innovation and robust design, particularly in professional timing instruments. But it was the 1960s that truly cemented Edox’s reputation as a pioneer in deep-sea timekeeping.

In 1961, Edox introduced the Delfin — a diving watch with a revolutionary double case back and special seals, making it incredibly water-resistant for its time. It was one of the earliest models to challenge the limits of underwater durability, and it became a favorite among professionals and recreational divers alike.

Building on that success, Edox launched the Hydro-Sub in 1965, featuring the brand’s patented crown system and capable of withstanding depths of up to 500 meters — an impressive feat then and now. These models weren’t just tools; they were statements of what was possible when form meets function beneath the surface.

Today, Edox continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. As the official timekeeper for various motorsport and sailing events, the brand balances speed and water — two environments where precision is non-negotiable. Edox remains a watchmaker’s brand — trusted by those who know. It embodies the best of independent Swiss horology: bold innovation, deep respect for tradition, and a design philosophy built around purpose. If you’re looking for a timepiece that combines heritage with cutting-edge performance, Edox offers something rare — a brand that dares to go deeper.
